LAST GENERATION
Montreal, Quebec, June 19th, 2024 — At 6:30 P.M 15 Last Generation Canada supporters interrupt leader of the Conservative party, Pierre Poilievre at his “Bring it Home Rally.” Poilievre is one of many members of parliament who, despite expert recommendations, has yet to call for a national firefighting agency. The 15 members of Last Generation Canada entered Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA at 6:30 P.M, with three supporters speaking out.
In Poilievre’s 20-year career he has voted against climate and environmental policies 400 times. As Poilievre is running for Prime Minister in the midst of climate collapse, his main climate strategy is denialism–and the deceptive slogan ‘axe the tax.’
“Your blind support of the oil and gas industry is fueling the fires and the climate crisis and you know it.. What do you have to say to the Canadian families that lost everything last year? What do you have to say to the 8 firefighters who died last year as you add fuel to the fire?” Says Jean-Philippe Amann, computer programer and devoted Father.
Last Generation Canada has been demanding government action on the climate crisis, starting with the creation of a national firefighting agency.
Deniz Lara, Mcgill student says “Pierre! How can you look the good people in this room in the eyes when you are knowingly destroying their futures and putting their lives at risk? What will you say to your two children when they realise their future is up in smoke because of you?”
The group’s demands are fueled by the out-of-control Canadian wildfires that, in 2023 released two billion tonnes of CO2, an amount greater than the total emissions of 100 countries. The wildfires destroyed five per cent of Canada’s Boreal forest.
Currently, over 70 per cent of Canadian firefighters are volunteers. As Alberta Fire Chiefs urgently call for a provincial strategy, Quebec firefighters prepare for a strike, and Ontario cuts its wildfire fighting budget, Last Generation Canada calls on the federal government to train and employ 50,000 firefighters this year.
This disruption follows the group blocking Highway 417 in Ottawa, and blocking access to the F1 Grand Prix in Montreal.
This summer, Last Generation Supporters will be acting in solidarity with other groups internationally to defend their families and communities from the crimes of fossil capital and the political leaders who are facilitating the destruction of the planet. The nonviolent campaign says disruptions will continue until their demands are met.
