LAST GENERATION
Today, supporters of Last Generation Canada launched a fourth day of action against fossil fuels, staging a demonstration and pouring an oil-like substance on themselves. The action followed three days of disruption at the Montreal airport. On Wednesday, three supporters glued their hands to the road, blocking access to the departures area. On Thursday, supporters sprayed washable pink paint, and on Friday, supporters glued their hands to their road, blocking access to the arrivals area. Eight supporters were arrested throughout the week.
The actions are part of Oil Kills, an international uprising in support of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, with simultaneous actions and demonstrations happening across North America and Europe. Today, hundreds have taken action, including three Just Stop Oil protesters who were detained and forcibly removed from Heathrow airport after one of them stood silently holding a sign saying ‘Oil Kills.’
Last Generation Canada is demanding that the government sign a legally binding treaty to stop extracting and burning oil, gas and coal by 2030, as well as supporting and financing other countries to make a fast, fair and just transition. They’re also calling on the government to create a permanent national firefighting agency that employs 50,000 full-time firefighters and a citizens’ assembly with legally binding power to decide how to tackle the climate and ecological crisis.
The demonstration started at around 1pm EDT, when Last Generation Canada supporters met in Phillips Square in downtown Montreal with banners saying ‘Oil Kills.’ Then, at around 2pm, three supporters entered the intersection of René-Lévesque Blvd. and Robert-Bourassa Blvd. and poured an oil-like substance on themselves.
Eulalie Reesink, an 18-year-old student, was one of the supporters who poured ‘oil.’ When asked why she took action today, Eulalie said this:
My entire life, I’ve heard about the catastrophic threat to humanity posed by burning fossil fuels. Scientists have been talking about it for decades. They told us we had to keep warming under 1.5 degrees to avoid the worst impacts of climate disaster, but we’ve already gone past that. Instead of stopping fossil fuels, our government is supporting more and more projects. So of course I’m here today. At this point, what else can we possibly do but whatever it takes to draw attention to the simple fact we need to end fossil fuels now before they end us.
The action comes after a massive wildfire tore through Jasper, and Canadians take in the devastation of a beloved and historic region, as well as ongoing threats to communities throughout Alberta and British Columbia. The wildfires followed major flooding last week in Toronto, which caused widespread disruption, and confirmation that Sunday and Monday were the hottest days ever recorded. Experts say continuing to pump fossil fuels into the atmosphere will ensure extreme unnatural weather events like these will increase in severity and frequency.
It’s clear – governments and fossil fuel companies are waging war on humanity. Continuing to extract and burn oil, gas and coal will kill millions of innocent people and destroy whole nations. We have to stop them. Join the international uprising taking nonviolent collective action to defend humanity. We refuse to die for fossil fuels and we refuse to stand by while millions are murdered. Our governments must sign a Fossil Fuel Treaty. We ask everyone to join us in the resistance. We have a plan. Are you in? Sign up for an action or find our donate link here.
